Bass Fishing Season at Lake El Salto:

Don McDowell from Shake, Rattle, and Troll
ESPN's Don McDowell
The fishing season at Lake El Salto begins the first of October and continues through June. The rainy season usually commences around mid June and continues through September.

Top water fishing at El Salto runs from October through April and the months of November, December and January can be excellent. One early November trip proved to be “simply the best” top water fishing we have ever encountered. The fish were shallow and aggressively feeding on Shad, Talipia and exploding on our top water offerings. The fall feeding frenzy usually continues into early December when the Big Girls begin their pre-spawn cycle with the spawn in full force by February. The best fishing for the post-spawn Big Girls will be April, May and June. The numbers of double digit fish increase dramatically after this time as well.

Trolling for Bass from a Mexican Panga at Lake El Salto

A typical day begins with a 5:30 AM wakeup with breakfast served at 6:00. The hearty breakfast will vary from day to day but will include fresh brewed coffee, juice, eggs, bacon, ham, hash brown potatoes, pancakes...and that’s just the American offering...then get ready and enjoy the authentic Mexican dishes as well. Finish up with that last cup...then it’s off to meet your guide at 6:30 or, if you prefer, grab another cup and watch the sun come up over the Sierra Madre’s. It’s your time and your call...your guide will be ready.

You will be fishing out of the Mexican Panga boats with 50 hp motor, perfect for Lake El Salto. These boats are big, wide, roomy and offer a front elevated casting platform. All boats are equipped with two padded swivel seats, trolling motor, dual batteries, dual gas tanks and Coastguard– approved life jackets. There will be a cooler with a compliment of soft drinks, beer and bottled water iced down and available for you throughout the day.

 Professional Native Mexican Guides

Your guide will be a professional native Mexican guide. The guides at this destination all have many years of experience...some have been with this outfitter for over 12 years. They know the lake and you can be sure that it is their desire to make every effort to ensure that you catch fish...big fish. But, that will be dependent on factors such as weather conditions as well as your level of skill and angling experience. They are anxious to assist in anyway you request. By demonstrating technique, taking care of equipment and encouraging you while you land that Trophy of a lifetime.

Returning Home for that Famous El Salto Lunch
Anglers usually return to the Lodge for lunch of fresh fish, sandwiches, more authentic Mexican dishes... and for certain...a short siesta. Then it’s back on the water for the afternoon and early evening bite.

 Breathtaking Lake El Salto Sunset
The sunsets at El Salto are breathtaking. A great place to enjoy them after a day on the lake is relaxing in the expansive open air lounge area with a cold beverage, fresh chips, salsa or nachos. Add to that the camaraderie of friends...both new and old...the recanting of the days angling adventures and, well, as the old cliché goes, “it just doesn’t get any better than that”.
