Bass Fishing El Salto:
Hardly
a weekend passes without one, if not most, of the outdoor television
channels offering their respective fishing shows on the great bass
fishing destinations of Mexico. And often, the show will feature the
outstanding Mexican bass lake, El Salto. It is no wonder that El
Salto is considered by many to be the hottest big bass lake in the
world! The number of big fish landed annually, by anglers
visiting this bass bonanza from all over the world, is astounding.
This exciting sportfishing destination rests right at the top of the list for ease of access. Located a short one and a half hour drive, approximately 70 miles northeast of Mazatlan via paved roads, Lake El Salto is nestled into the base of the rugged Sierra Madre Mountain range at an elevation of 600 feet above sea level. The Mazatlan entry is services by several air carriers, including Continental, Aero Mexico, United and others.

Lake El Salto was formed by damming of the Elota River. This scenic impoundment covers roughly 24,000 acres at full pool. There are hundreds of coves with water depths reaching in excess of 225’ at the dam. El Salto abounds in virtually every kind of structure imaginable...from brushy points and flats to rock covered ridges and humps. A few of the old villages and cemeteries were flooded when the lake was impounded and now are home to some of the giant bass El Salto has become famous for.
In
addition to the largemouth bass introduced from the Elota River, it
is no secret that El Salto was also stocked with Florida-strain bass
in the mid 1980’s. Over the past twenty years these El Salto
Super Bass have grown to incredible sizes. The current
lake record behemoth weighed in at 18# 8oz.
in September of 2000. The forage base for these heavyweights are the
“protein packed” Talipia, along with an abundant shad population.
Year
in and year out El Salto produces hundreds of bass over 10#. If
you are looking for that double digit trophy, El Salto offers an excellent
opportunity. Heavyweights in the 10#, 11# and 12# class are
reported almost daily with “teenagers”, fish of 13# or greater frequently
reported from October through June. The possibility that a
world record fish resides in the clear blue waters of El Salto is
without a doubt...very real.
